While any stay at Strawberry Hill is certain to be a most memorable experience, fishing the Lower Humber, especially the pools directly in front of Strawberry Hill, have proven to be its greatest reward. The river is a deep, deceptively fast body of water that winds through the Long Range Mountains. Most importantly, however, is the late July through mid fall run of "big" salmon that lie beneath the shimmering water surface.

    Salmon Stats

Fishing this river is a great challenge. Fish found in this area are full-sized salmon that have spent upwards of two years at sea before returning to spawn and many of the truly large one, over 30 pounds, are unique to the Humber River. Locals will tell you that landing a salmon on the Lower Humber certifies you as a true salmon angler.

    Bag Limits

Strawberry Hill promotes a catch and release experience. This is due to our dedication to conserving the resource and also to the fact that only three fish in the past three seasons have actually been small enough to qualify for retention under our government regulations (only fish measuring less than 63 cm or 24.8 inches may be retained).

    Equipment

Our expert guides recommend a single handed rod, 9ft for #8 combined with a disc drag reel with a backing capacity of 250 yds and weight forward, triangle tapered floating line.

The river is almost exclusively fished from a boat, though some wading opportunities exist, with equal success on both a wet and dry fly (spey rods are a definite asset for anyone wishing to wade and fish with wet flies).

The classic feathering such as the "Green Highlander" and "Jock Scott", size 2 - 6, are very effective in catching the large salmon while any number of standard hairwings are the most popular wet flies. The Wulff series of dry flies and bomber bugs are also quite productive here, though little will beat the local flies available to guests on arrival.

    Fishing Groups

We are restricted to a maximum of 8 anglers in any single session because of the arrangement of pools and our commitment to resource conservation. This is no problem to larger groups because of the abundance of alternate activities available and the varying levels of fishing enthusiasm.

    Seasons

The Lower Humber River is open from June 1 until October 1. Prime time is early June and from the last week in July until the first week in October. Fishing on the Humber River is available every day from dawn to 10:30 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to dusk.

Other rivers in the area are easily accessed by car or helicopter, which allows you to book at any point throughout the summer knowing there will be good fishing opportunities. Please contact us directly for details and to allow us to customize an itinerary for you.
